The Reconstruction Report

What It Is

Short, social-media-format video series featuring Civil War stories that contradict Lost Cause narratives.

Objective

  1. Expose young adults, who’ve had little to no exposure, to the Civil War.
  2. Counter institutional efforts to censor, suppress, or obfuscate stories about the Civil War in an effort to align with a regressive social or political agenda.
  3. Drive viewers to seek out deeper knowledge by sparking their curiosity.

Approach

  • Elevate under-represented stories and historical figures.
  • Highlight historical through lines.
  • Embrace Authenticity + Transparency.
    • Boldly articulate a point of view, avoid presenting perspective as objective, demonstrate ownership of opinions.
    • Cite sources, credit creators + point audiences to source material.
    • Use contemporary language, make concepts accessible, incorporate modern motifs, find humor.
  • Meet the audience where they are.
    • Style - Adapt the content to modern format, incorporate contemporary aesthetics and modern media.
    • Content - Emphasize moments and themes that are relatable to a modern audience.
    • Distribution - Post to multiple social media platforms.
