The site of the fort was destroyed by beach erosion in the late 1800’s. Today, this island is only accessible via private charters.
The site of the fort is not easily accessible. A tour of nearby Fort Sumter National Monument from the ferry landing on Concord Street in Charleston will include a view of where Fort Wagner used to stand.
HISTORY
The Battle of Fort Wagner on July 18, 1863, was an unsuccessful assault led by the 54thMassachusetts, an African American infantry, famously depicted in the movie Glory. Fort Wagner is located on Morris Island in the Charleston Harbor, South Carolina.
